Chapter 6: Jesus Christ, Son of God
The Name Jesus
Jesus Christ: The eternal Son of God, who was born of the Virgin Mary, suffered crucifixion and death, rose from the dead and ascended into heaven, and will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. “Jesus,” which means “God saves” in Hebrew, was the name given to him at the Annunciation; “Christ” is the title which comes from the Greek translation of the Hebrew Messiah
and means “anointed.”
Mediator/Mediatrix: One who links or reconciles separate or opposing parties. Thus Jesus Christ is the “one mediator between God and the human race” (1 Tm 2:5). Through his sacrificial offering he has become high preist and unique mediator who has gained for us access to God’s saving grace for humanity. Moreover, Mary too is sometimes called Mediatrix in virture of her cooperation in the saving mission of Christ, who alone is the unique mediator between God and humanity.
The Birth of Jesus
As St. Irenaeus says, “Being obedient she became the cause of salvation for herself and for the whole human race.” Hence not a few of the early Fathers gladly assert … “The knot of Eve’s disobedience was untied by Mary’s obedience: what the virgin Even bound through her disbelief, Mary loosened by her faith.” Comparing her with Even, they call Mary “the Mother of the living” and frequently claim: “Death through Eve, life through Mary.”
Mary is a virgin because her virginity is the sign of her faith “unadulterated by any doubt,” and of her undivided gift of herself to God’s will. It is her faith that enables her to become the mother of the Savior: “Mary is more blessed because she embraces faith in Christ than because she conceives the flesh of Christ.”
Play and Pray
(easy ways to reinforce our faith)
Learn the Angelus. Traditionally said in the morning, at noon, and the evening.
R: The Angel of the Lord declared to Mary:
V:And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
All: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
R: Behold the handmaid of the Lord:
V: Be it done unto me according to Thy word.
Hail Mary . . .
R: And the Word was made Flesh:
V: And dwelt among us.
Hail Mary . . .
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray:
Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ Our Lord.
"Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you" (Lk 1:28)
"Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb"
