Between 1890 and 1910 Centralia was a mission of the Chehalis parish. Masses were held monthly in a private home, then in a structure previously occupied by a saloon and later by the Salvation Army. Difficulty was encountered in acquiring a building due to oposition from non-Catholics. For a time another building was used. This was a converted residence which later became the Seventh-day Baptist.
In lare part, due to the efforts of Edith Breen who endeavored to raise funds for a church, the parish of Saint Mary was erected in February, 1910 out of St. John's in Chehalis (it was some years later that the Chehalis church came to be known at St Joseph). It might be worth noting that St Pius X was Pope at that point in history. The first Mass was celebrated in July, 1910 and Bishop O'Dea dedicated the church in July of the following year. The rectory was built in 1912.
